I got my P1 son Joel, to start on NeuroLAT in K2 too, after I was introduced to this program by Audrey who shared about her P1 girl’s breakthroughs in her studies and behaviour, after doing NeuroLAT.
Before he started on NeuroLAT, Joel tends to lose focus and gets distracted (mind floats away) and unable to stay focused without being constantly nudged by an adult. He tends to forget where he puts his bag and wallet, given his absentmindedness.
He has difficulties reading English words, and learning to spell his English spelling is a dread given his weak memory. I was thinking perhaps his picking up of phonics late at K2 may have led to his earlier struggles in learning, reading and recognizing English words, but he has no issues learning Chinese characters, after practicing how to write.
The first 6 months of doing NeuroLAT was coupled with my consistent disciplining to overcome his learning issues. He had a tendency to enter in answers impulsively before he can process his thoughts, hence making careless mistakes. I made him do NeuroLAT lessons almost everyday for the first 6 months to pull up his socks in developing his cognitive abilities. If he doesn’t achieve a trophy (at least 80%) by deliberately paying more attention and being more conscientious, I will make him do 1-2 more lessons till he achieves a trophy as the goal for the day if he wants to have an off day from NeuroLAT for the week. I had to enforce this “military style” of approach on Joel. Otherwise, he will slip back to his old bad habits, fiddle with other things around him and let his mind wander off, instead of focusing on his lesson. He even purposely dwindled his time away and waited till 1 min for each question he has answered to relax his brains, before pressing “enter” to the next question. His onboarding Teacher Belle was shocked by his behaviour and has to patiently keep nudging him again and again to speed up, so he can progress up his brain’s learning curves on the program.
With my ongoing reinforcement of disciplinary approach on him, Joel eventually learnt that the cause-and-effect given the pain of his consequences he has to face, given this young age. That is, only if he is disciplined, then he can get to earn his extra time to relax or there is no way out, as long as Mommy is around to make him committed to the NeuroLAT plan. There are times where he remarked he rather do 30 pages of assessment books for each subject, than do NeuroLAT. I gave him a choice he can choose that certainly or do NeuroLAT. Eventually after grumbling, he still chooses to do NeuroLAT instead.
It took me more than 6 months to start seeing Joel beginning to 开窍, waking up to his senses and being a brighter and vigilant child. Before his September holiday this year, he scored 10 out of 10 for English spelling. Though he may whine at the start but after pushing him to memorise, he will still be able to remember all the spellings correctly for his spelling test. I also observed that he is able to learn Maths concepts like a sponge. He catches new concepts immediately after the school teacher explains to the class how to do, and he can do the rest of the homework independently. His strategic planning and logical thinking have improved evidently, with his academic performance.
In terms of behaviour, I am happy to see Joel becoming more sensible and mature, taking ownership of his responsibilities for his age. He is now more earnest about his studies and will ask me to check if he got all his answers for Maths correctly after doing his Maths homework. Making him experience the penalty of not achieving and tasting the reward of his achievement works for Joel. Instead of spending his time on Mindcraft video games with online team players, he has shown interest to read Dogman comics books instead which comes as a surprise to me. His Dad rewards his good results and behaviour by playing Playstation adventures with him together, as father-and-son bonding time. He is also less careless now but more conscious of where he places his belongings.
Joel has just finished the 12-months NeuroLAT program. We see that the 12-months tenure of the program has helped to further reinforce and increase his learning abilities even through to 9-12 months. The more he attempts the lessons, the snmarter his brains get.
