TESTIMONIAL BY JOHN’S MUM ON NEUROLAT EFFECTS ON HER SON

John has been diagnosed with autism since young. He has a deficit in expressive communication, so he tends to give single word answers.

He is 26 years old this year and we started on the NeuroLAT program 6 months ago. He commits himself to doing the NeuroLAT training every day, even when we were on holiday. He has made this a part of his daily routine and wants to finish the whole exercise from start to end so that he can move on to the other items in his mental checklist of things to do. Because of this consistency, we have seen good progress in his executive functioning abilities.

After 6 months of training, John can now speak short sentences like “I am hungry” and “need to go now”. Recently when we were fetching our friends from the airport to their apartment, he repeatedly reminded them to not forget to take their belongings from the car by repeating “luggage bag” a few times to them. He can also remember items on the shopping list that I have asked him to remind me to buy when I get to the supermarket.

John’s skills has improved a lot over the past few months and he is more able to stay focused on tasks for longer periods of time. NeuroLAT has helped him to be mentally alert – he understands things very quickly now.

We are happy with the progress that John has made so far on the program and we are glad that he is willing to devote himself to his training daily.

SHARING BY JOHN’S DAD ON HIS SON’S PERFORMANCE

John has been doing Ceramic Painting with his Dad for about 6 years. In pursuing this weekend hobby, John has improved tremendously in his fine motor skills, learnt many techniques in painting and attaining independence in completing his works. John has participated in Art Exhibitions and won numerous awards at the annual Canning Show in Perth. He has also exhibited his works at public events organised by Creative Connections, As We Are Art Awards and Belmont Art Awards.

For many years John has been a good kitchen help at home, capable of cleaning and cutting ingredients for meals preparation. For the past 2 years, he has learnt to cook independently and now insists that he does the full works, from preparation to cooking and serving on a daily basis. Nowadays, he does the shopping with me, marinates the meat and with some guidance, plans the menu for the week. He only asks me to wash the dishes after dinner!

After finishing high school, John attended Work Training at a Supported Employment Centre for about 3 years. John possesses good working attitude and is productive, despite still having some self-stimulatory behaviours commonly associated with ASD. He has since then been employed as a staff, doing packaging and simple assembly work. John is happy and passionate about going to work.
